On the forefront of dismantling stigma
Conception &
Early Years
In 2016, the youth committee at the Islamic Center of Detroit led by Yusra Muflahi realized the need to bring mental health to the Muslim-American & Arab-American diaspora in the greater Detroit area. MY Mental Wellness was founded with the goal of hosting programs, trainings, and workshops on a variety of topics such as substance abuse, addiction, anger management, and pre-marriage counseling.
The Clinic’s Establishment
As the demand for therapy services outgrew programing needs of the community, the Islamic Center of Detroit hired its first therapist in the Fall of 2021.
By February of 2024, MY Mental Wellness became the first fully staffed community mental health clinic to be established inside a masjid (mosque) in North America.
About Us
Our mission is to build a supportive community where mental health is openly discussed and stigma is diminished. We are dedicated to providing accessible, affordable, and culturally competent services to enhance well-being through education, prevention, and recovery.
Mission
The Islamic Center of Detroit recently started two major projects within the greater Detroit community by purchasing the historic Fairlane Club for Youth and Families in Dearborn and acquiring an abandoned school in Detroit, which will be converted into a community health clinic. MY Mental Wellness will have its presence at both of these locations.
Our goal is to continue providing a blueprint for masajid (mosques) all around the country to implement this project. For more information regarding our expansions, please email mmw@icdonline.org.
Our vision is a destigmatized population prospering with emphasis on mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being.
